of the MacLeans was ‘Gilleathain na Tuaidh’ or Gillean of the Battle-axe, a 5th century Celtic Warrior. The name was shortened over time to Mac’Lean. Some people will tell you that “Mc” means you are Irish and “Mac” means that you are Scottish, but they are both only variations of the prefix “Mac,” Gaelic for “son of.” I can trace my lineage all the way back to 1263 when Iain Dhu MacLean settled on the Isle of Mull. His sons, Lachlan Lubanach and Eachainn (Hector) Reaganach were the founders of, respectively, the MacLeans of Duart and the MacLaines of Lochbuie. I could go on but let’s just say, you probably wouldn’t want to be seated next to me at a dinner party.
